If you spend more than 6 months of the year in Spain then it is ane you Intend to drive a foreign registered vehicle then you are required by law to Import  it into the country and register it on Spanish number plates.

Although this is not a particularly complicated procedure it is very time consuming and can be confusing if you are not aware of the offices to go to.

 The steps involved are:-

     1)      Obtain a Spanish Technical Specification of he vehicle.

2)      Obtain an emissions certificate from the manufacturer.

3)      Pass a Spanish MOT

4)      Pay Road Tax.

5)      Pay importation tax.

6)      Present all documents to La Jefetura de Trafico and receive your Spanish documentation and number plates.  

It is worth pointing out that supposed “Grey Imports” into the UK prove to be very problematic as they were never made for the European market.

If you are have a photo card UK license then it will need to be registered with La Jefetura de Trafico so you appear on the computer system.
